At Arvato Systems, we have taken on the exciting challenge of supporting platform X in implementing its digital sovereignty and data security requirements. We provided the AWS EKS as a managed service to create a modern and scalable IT infrastructure. This platform enables platform X to operate its applications flexibly and efficiently and forms the basis for a future-proof digital strategy. Through our comprehensive support and the provision of a modern IT infrastructure, we have enabled platform X to meet digital sovereignty and data security requirements and develop future-oriented solutions. This helps us actively shape the digital transformation of platform X.

Project Overview

Initial situation

platform X faced the challenge of maximizing the cost efficiency of its IT infrastructure while maintaining digital sovereignty. The existing architecture was not optimally aligned with market requirements and there was an urgent need for flexible, scalable solutions to improve application performance and availability. In this role, platform X pursues an active IT strategy and relies on the AWS EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service) from Arvato Systems as a managed service. This decision should enable flexible and efficient application provisioning and forms the basis for the integration of further open source solutions and security measures.

Vision

The vision for the project at platform X is to create an agile and future-proof IT infrastructure that integrates digital sovereignty and data security as core values. By integrating innovative open source solutions and robust security measures, the aim was not only to increase the efficiency and performance of the systems, but also to provide a scalable infrastructure that supports future growth.

Solution

As part of the collaboration, a high-performance Kubernetes platform was established at platform X, which serves as the technological basis for a wide range of projects. There was a need to create a scalable and highly available infrastructure. On the EKS clusters provided by Arvato Systems, platform X currently develops and operates around 200 projects and workloads, which are organized in separate test and production environments. This structure makes it possible to react flexibly to requirements and at the same time guarantee the quality and stability of the applications. The applications that run on this platform include digital platforms such as "skillsforwork.de" in the area of e-learning and "ELEX" for export controls, as well as the backend systems of platform X itself. We use skillsforwork.de to train SMEs throughout the DACH region, from mandatory training to soft skills and specialist topics. ELEX handles all export control checks for customers from the German SME sector and documents them in a legally compliant manner. The platforms have already won several awards, including from the German trade press. Thanks to the AWS infrastructure, platform X benefits from dynamic scaling and a load-balanced environment that makes it possible to guarantee maximum availability. This partnership is not just a technical decision, but a strategic step that helps to increase innovation and offer platform X's customers real added value.

Efficient application deployment and resource utilization with AWS EKS

In the technical implementation, Arvato Systems uses the AWS EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service) as a managed service that enables flexible application provisioning. We integrated various open source solutions such as Prometheus for system monitoring, Flux for automated deployments, KEDA for flexible scaling, External Secrets for secure data handling and Kubemod for customizing Kubernetes resources. We also use Karpenter to dynamically provide spot instances. This optimizes our use of resources and reduces costs by making efficient use of unused capacity. Security measures are central to our architecture: AWS KMS encrypts data stored here, TLS protects data transfers and the AWS WAF secures our applications against threats. We rely on OpsWatch and AWS CloudTrail for monitoring and auditing, while our CI/CD pipelines enable fast and reliable changes. By continuously optimizing security, scalability and cost efficiency, we ensure that we meet the ever-changing requirements and secure the competitiveness of platform X.
