OGE, based in Essen, is one of the largest transmission system operators in Germany with a pipeline network of around 12,000 km in length. With 1,450 employees, the company markets gas transport capacities and operates, maintains and repairs the pipeline system. In addition, it controls and monitors the network and the storage stations as well as the further development of the transmission networks based on nationwide network development plans.

In July 2019, OGE selected Arvato Systems as the leading IT outsourcing provider for operating and developing its IT landscape. Together with OGE, Arvato Systems is developing the corporate IT step by step until at least 2025. Goal of the IT transformation: a hybrid cloud scenario - i.e. operation and development of IT services within the OGE data center and the use of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS solutions from the Microsoft Azure Cloud.

Project Overview

Initial situation

New markets, transformation of energy systems, new technologies and working models: With the strategic principles "Cloud First", "Mobile First" and "Agile First", OGE has developed a vision to meet the massive challenges in the energy market.

With its transformation, OGE is pursuing four strategic goals:

  • Future viability through the use of cloud technologies
  • Flexibility and agility to keep pace with the ongoing digitalization
  • Customer satisfaction is facilitated by lean and stable processes
  • Security through stable IT operation (e.g. according to ISO 27001)
Vision

To ensure optimized and secure migration and implementation, we work with a two-speed approach: During a 12-month transition period, ongoing IT operations are secured. At the same time, agile speedboat projects are used to enable rapid innovation. Thus, we ensure that OGE's daily business is perfectly supported by our experienced operating teams. At the same time, we drive innovation through next-generation cloud services.
In the following project period, the IT and communication systems (ITC) will be migrated to the Azure Cloud. This will iteratively transform OGE's IT landscape into a hybrid landscape. The transformation phase to the cloud environment includes the introduction of Modern Workplace and the cloudification of SAP and non-SAP infrastructure.

Solution

We support a key player in the European gas market as a long-term digitalization partner within the entire energy industry. This makes us a reliable partner in the sustainable modernization of OGE's business IT. To meet the urgent investments in IT infrastructure, the targeted innovative strength and strategic growth that OGE is striving for, we are exploiting the potential of cloud-based Microsoft solutions.
Not only does our joint transformation project make OGE competitive, it also enables the development of a digital corporate culture and modern customer communication with successful Microsoft applications such as Microsoft Teams.
With the "IT of two speeds" project approach, we are also supporting OGE in meeting regulatory requirements for the operation of critical infrastructures and sustainability.
